Biography
Ken Dunn is a Canadian folk singer-songwriter and fingerstyle acoustic guitarist whose work bridges contemporary songwriting with traditional and Celtic influences. Over a career spanning more than thirty years, he has developed a body of music grounded in melody, narrative, and a sustained engagement with themes of peace, social justice, and environmental awareness.
Born in Windsor, Ontario, Dunn’s early musical life was shaped by the folk revival of the 1960s and 70s. After moving to Toronto, he immersed himself in the Yorkville music scene, busking and performing in coffee houses while developing his craft as a songwriter. These formative experiences, along with periods of personal and economic instability, would later inform both the emotional depth and social consciousness of his work.
Following a period devoted to education and professional work as a clinical psychologist, Dunn returned to music in the 1990s, beginning a sustained period of touring and recording. He performed extensively across Canada, the United States, and Central America, appearing in venues ranging from small listening rooms to major folk festivals, and sharing stages with artists such as Jerry Jeff Walker, Willie P. Bennett, Valdy, and Garnet Rogers.
Dunn’s recordings—now numbering more than a dozen albums—feature collaborations with a number of prominent Canadian musicians and have received critical recognition, international radio airplay, and chart placements. Releases such as The Great Unknown, Wondrous Beauty, and Ashes in the Morning have been noted for their lyrical sincerity and musical restraint, while later anthology recordings document the breadth of his catalogue over time.
In addition to songwriting, Dunn has maintained a parallel focus on instrumental acoustic guitar, developing a fingerstyle approach characterized by clarity, nuance, and a strong melodic sensibility.
